An Evening with Sarah Lonsdale: Wildly Different - How Five Women Reclaimed Nature in a Man’s World
Thursday 4th December | 6-7:30pm
Tickets: £15 per person, including a glass of wine and seasonal nibbles
Join us for a special evening with author Sarah Lonsdale, celebrating her new book Wildly Different, recently listed in the Financial Times ‘Best Books for Summer 2025’.
Sarah will explore the extraordinary lives of five women including Evelyn Cheesman (1881–1969); explorer, scientist, writer, and artist who was born and raised in Court Lodge, Westwell. From childhood walks with her dog Shep in the Downs, to becoming the first female Keeper at London Zoo, Evelyn spent 40 years travelling the world in search of rare species, sending a poison-tipped spear to King George V by accident, and inspiring David Attenborough. Her discoveries helped advance the science of plate tectonics, and she continued her adventures into her 70s, aiding British Naval Intelligence during WWII.
Sarah will also share stories of the other remarkable women featured in her book and the challenges they overcame in a male-dominated field, followed by a Q&A with the audience.
Book signing: Copies of Wildly Different will be available to purchase on the night for £15 cash (usual price £20).
